Sunny Isles and Aventura Boxing: Where Russian-Speaking Families Train

Hallandale Beach sits between Sunny Isles and Hollywood, and that is where the Russian-speaking families of the area send their kids to box. Here is how it works.

BRUS Boxing trains at Amp'd Up Training, 117 Northwest 9th Terrace, Bay 2, Hallandale Beach, FL 33009. That address is a short drive from the Sunny Isles towers, from Aventura, and from North Miami and Hollywood. The coach is Artem Brusov, a professional boxer with a 13-2 record and 12 knockouts, more than 120 amateur fights, and about twelve years of coaching in the Soviet boxing school. He speaks Russian and English. Kids Boxing runs Monday to Friday at 7:00 PM for ages 8 or 9 and up. Adult Boxing runs Monday to Friday at 8:00 PM. Private sessions are by appointment, at the gym, in your condo gym, or at your home. Group coaching is $180 a month plus gym membership. The first group class is free.

Why the gym is in Hallandale Beach and not on Collins Avenue

People from Sunny Isles sometimes ask why we are not closer. The honest answer is that a real boxing gym needs a ring, heavy bags, floor space, and a landlord who does not mind the noise. That does not exist inside a condo tower on Collins. It exists in an industrial bay a few minutes west of the beach, which is what Amp'd Up Training is. From most of Sunny Isles the drive is around ten to fifteen minutes. From Aventura it is under ten.

The location has a second advantage. Hallandale Beach sits between Sunny Isles, Aventura, Hollywood, and North Miami Beach, which means the kids in the 7:00 PM class come from all four. A child from a Sunny Isles building trains next to a child from Aventura Lakes and a child from Hollywood. The class is bigger and the sparring partners are better matched than they would be in a single-building gym.

Who trains here

Many of the families at BRUS Boxing speak Russian at home: Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, post-Soviet immigrants, Israeli families with a Russian-speaking parent, second-generation kids who answer in English. Sunny Isles and Hallandale have a denser Russian-speaking population than the rest of South Florida, and the gym reflects the neighborhood.

That matters for one practical reason. Boxing instruction is made of small corrections: turn the hip, drop the elbow, look at the chest. When those corrections come in the language a child hears at home, they land faster. Artem coaches in both languages, so a kid who thinks in Russian gets the correction in Russian and a kid who thinks in English gets it in English. Parents who do not speak Russian are not at any disadvantage. The session runs in English by default and switches when it helps.

Adults are a mix. Some are fathers who boxed as teenagers back home and want the discipline again. Some are women from Aventura who want conditioning with real technique behind it. Some have never thrown a punch and want to learn properly. The adult class at 8:00 PM takes all of them, and beginners are welcome.

What a kids class looks like

Kids Boxing is Monday to Friday at 7:00 PM. The minimum age is 8 or 9, depending on maturity, and we do not take very young children. The class is built the way the Soviet school builds everything: stance first, footwork second, hands last. A child will spend weeks on how to stand and move before anyone talks about hitting hard.

Sparring for kids is strictly controlled. It happens only with full gear, only when Artem decides a child is ready, and only against a matched partner. Kids are never pushed into unsafe sparring. The goal of the class is coordination, focus, self-control, and respect. Character and physical development, not violence. If a session becomes dangerous or disrespectful, the coach stops it and protects the group.

Parents can watch. Many of the Russian-speaking parents in Sunny Isles and Aventura grew up around boxing and want to see how a class is run before they commit. The first group class is free, so bring your child, sit on the side, and decide afterward.

Private sessions in your building

Most Sunny Isles and Aventura towers have a gym on a lower floor with a few square meters of open floor. That is enough for a private boxing session. Artem comes to your condo gym or your home by agreement, with pads and gloves, and runs the same one-on-one session he would run at Amp'd Up Training. Price can vary with location and distance, and building access rules are on you to sort out with the front desk.

This format suits parents who want a child coached privately before joining the group, adults with a schedule that does not fit 8:00 PM, and anyone who would rather not drive. At the gym, private sessions are $100 single, $450 for five, or $800 for ten.
